Upgrading the PWD Philippines ID System, Empowering the Disabled

personal project

PWD Philippines is an all-access medical identification system for persons with disability (PWDs) in the Philippines. As a creative and a PWD, this thesis project was very close to my heart. It felt only natural to want to give back to my community, and in the best way I knew how—design. I wanted to empower my community by upgrading the local PWD ID system, including all benefits, to one that was more efficient and accessible for PWDs.

  • Vision

Aside from systems in place in the Philippines that are still very much lacking in accommodating the very people they’re supposed to help, PWDs feel like so much of their lives are not in their control.

To address that, this ID system ‬acts as a hub for everything PWD-related. It contains medical profiles, discounted transactions, reminders for medication and medical and/or dental checkups, plus a feature that connects a PWD with the community for extra support—whether emotional or otherwise. ‬It is also color-coded to add visual cues about the kind of disability a person has without having to ask.

  • Solution

I created a whole identity system that had analog and digital systems that complement each other in a Philippine setting. This meant that PWDs could use both or either, depending on the circumstances; for example, if digital was unavailable, they could still utilize the analog system, and vice versa.

Hopefully, with this design solution, we can take a step forward towards digitizing this ID system and give them a little bit more direction and control over their lives, and the confidence to live it out to the fullest.
